Effect of Adding MgO on Microstructure of Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) Composite for Medical Applications

Zirconia toughened alumina (Biolox delta) is a new-generation ceramic with four times the strength of alone, used in artificial joints. The composite ZTA, consisting 82 wt. %Al2O3, 17 % ZrO2, 0.5 Cr2O3, and SrO, was made using sol-gel process, starting salts. To investigate effects MgO on ZTA microstructure, two concentrations (0.25 %) were added to biolox during gelation study microstructure. Powders sintered air for 2 hrs. at 1450 ºC. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) characterize sintering powders. + xMgO structural characteristics differ from pure ZTA's. According XRD calculations, grainsize decreased 41.82 nm 31.88 26.83 increasing concentration, but specific surface area (SSA) increased 40.63 54.79 m2/gm while crystallization improved.
